Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem - Blomstedt, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
SKU: 2954

Herbert Blomstedt well understands the virtues of simplicity, making this direct and refreshing performance of Brahms's ubiquitous choral masterpiece the best available since the famous Klemperer/EMI recording. Without feeling any need to indulge in saccharine expressiveness, the Swedish conductor's work is all the more moving for being so excitingly played and sung. No funereal gloom here, just the sweet solace that Brahms clearly intended. --David Hurwitz

Nielsen: Symphonies 4-6 (San Francisco Symphony/Blomstedt)
SKU: 2953

Herbert Blomstedt's Nielsen symphony cycle is widely acclaimed as among his best. The second set of three continues Blomstedt's fine interpretations of these powerful symphonies. Nielsen's Fifth is a stunning, miraculous, amazing, tragic, and ultimately life-affirming masterpiece. Written in the wake of the Great War when the scope of its horror had become fully apparent to the composer, it speaks profoundly and prophetically of the rise of nationalism, fascism, and the eternal conflict between a peaceful social discourse and the war-machine of the state.

Two-disc set recorded in standard CD format (DDD).
