Following closely on the heels of their seven Grammy-Award winning Mahler recording cycle, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony present a hybrid SACD recording of Charles Ives' A Concord Symphony orchestrated by Henry Brant and Aaron Copland's Organ Symphony with organist Paul Jacobs. A Concord Symphony is Brant's orchestral arrangement of Ives' Sonata No. 2 for Piano.

Critical Praise for San Francisco Symphony performances of A Concord Symphony Feb 3-6, 2010

"Brant, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who died in 2008 at the age of 94, labored for nearly half a century to orchestrate this landmark of the 20th century piano repertoire. The resulting work, which got a superb performance in Davies Symphony Hall on Wednesday night from Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony, more than justified his faith... this is an exciting and hugely important addition to the repertoire, and [the] performance - vigorous, tender, and evocative - did it full justice"
-Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle

"Like the Concord Sonata itself, A Concord Symphony is at once a joy ride and a meditation... it came as no surprise that the experience proved to be both joyous and moving... MTT and his game musicians gave it their considerable all, and accomplished the composer's and Brant's superhuman demands with amazing bravura and intense understanding."
-Philip Campbell, Bay Area Reporter

"This is music as natural force; the orchestra sounded like bracing gusts of chilled air, whipping out of the canyons."
-Richard Scheinin, San Jose Mercury News

Critical Praise for the Paul Jacobs and the San Francisco Symphony performances of Copland's Organ Symphony September 22-25, 2010

"With organist Paul Jacobs as the nimble soloist and the orchestra at its robust and delicate best, this disc promises to be a keeper... Thomas and the orchestra delivered this music with full-throated vigor, and Jacobs made a sonorous contribution to the whole."
-Joshua Kosman, San Franicsco Chronicle

"Tilson Thomas has always found the expressive possibilities ...with the collaboration of organist Paul Jacobs (at his most sprightly and decorous), and an orchestra that seems an extension of the conductor's will, the feeling of nascent genius is too prominent to ignore."
-Allan Ulrich, Financial Times

"...Jacobs gaves a deftly delineated account of the organ part; the finale in particular showed a deep and mutual understanding between conductor and soloist."
-Georgia Rowe, San Francisco Classical Voice
